HSK Level 3 Complete Guide 2026: Format, Vocabulary and Preparation
HSK Level 3 is where learners move beyond basic recognition and begin using Chinese across longer conversations, reading passages and written tasks.
This 2026 guide explains the current test format, the 600-word vocabulary requirement, essential grammar, preparation strategies and how HSK 3.0 may affect your test choice.

Check which HSK format you are taking
Regular HSK test dates in 2026 continue to use the current six-level format. HSK 3.0 is being introduced through selected trial sessions, with its wider launch to be announced separately.
For regular current-format HSK Level 3, the exam includes Listening, Reading and Writing. For an HSK 3.0 Level 3 trial session, candidates must also register for the corresponding speaking test.
What is HSK Level 3?
HSK, or the Chinese Proficiency Test, assesses the Chinese-language ability of non-native speakers. HSK Level 3 is designed for learners who can understand and use Chinese in familiar study, work, travel and everyday situations.
It is the first current HSK level to include a writing section, making sentence structure, word order and character recall an important part of preparation.
Current HSK Level 3 test format
| Test section | Parts | Questions | Approximate time | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 4 parts | 40 | 35 minutes | Understanding dialogues, identifying key details and following the complete meaning of spoken Chinese. |
| Reading | 3 parts | 30 | 30 minutes | Matching information, completing sentences and understanding short passages. |
| Writing | 2 parts | 10 | 15 minutes | Arranging words into correct sentences and writing characters from pinyin. |
| Total | 9 parts | 80 | About 85 minutes | The full exam takes about 90 minutes when five minutes for personal information are included. |
The maximum score is 300. A total score of 180 or above is considered a passing result. The score report includes Listening, Reading, Writing and Total scores.
At HSK Level 3, recognising a sentence is no longer enough. You need to understand word order, place time and location expressions correctly and recall common characters accurately.
HSK Level 3 vocabulary in 2026
The current HSK Level 3 is based on a cumulative vocabulary of 600 words. This includes the 300 words from HSK Levels 1 and 2 plus approximately 300 additional words.
The new vocabulary allows you to describe plans, feelings, relationships, experiences, health, study, work, travel and more detailed everyday situations.
Learn each word in characters, pinyin, audio and context. At this level, also practise recalling how common characters are written, particularly those that may appear in the writing section.
Separate the words you recognise from the words you can recall without help. The writing section makes active character knowledge more important than at Levels 1 and 2.
HSK Level 3 grammar you need to know
HSK Level 3 introduces a wider range of sentence patterns and requires greater control of word order. Focus on understanding how each structure works inside a complete sentence.
