What is the HSK exam, and why should I take it?

The HSK is the official Chinese language proficiency test recognized globally by universities, employers, and government institutions. It’s the go-to certification for students and professionals needing proof of their Mandarin skills for study, work, or visa applications in China.
What is the format of the HSK test?
The HSK includes Listening, Reading, and Writing (starting from Level 3).
- HSK 1: Listening + Reading (40 questions – about 35 minutes)
- HSK 2: Listening + Reading (60 questions – about 50 minutes)
- HSK 3: Listening + Reading and Writing (80 questions – about 85 minutes)
- HSK 4: Listening + Reading and Writing (100 questions – about 100 minutes)
- HSK 5: Listening + Reading and Writing (100 questions – about 120 minutes)
- HSK 6: Listening + Reading and Writing (101 questions – about 135 minutes)
- HSK 7-9: Listening + reading + writing + translation + speaking (98 questions – about 210 minutes). You receive a level based on your score.

Should I take the HSK Speaking Test?
The HSK Speaking is the official speaking counterpart to the written HSK test.

There are three levels:
- HSK Speaking Beginner – for learners at HSK 3
- HSK Speaking Intermediate – for HSK 4
- HSK Speaking Advanced – for HSK 5–6
While HSK Speaking was optional in the past, it is now increasingly required alongside written HSK exams, especially from HSK 3 and above. Many universities, scholarship programs, and employers in China and abroad now require both written and spoken certifications.

How long does it take to prepare for each HSK level?

That said, here are official word count benchmarks and typical study timelines:
- HSK 1: 150 words → ~2–3 months
- HSK 2: 300 words → ~3–4 months
- HSK 3: 600 words → ~6 months
- HSK 4: 1,200 words → ~8–10 months
- HSK 5: 2,500 words → ~1–1.5 years
- HSK 6: 5,000+ words → ~1.5–2 years
- HSK 7–9: 11,000+ words → ~2–3+ years of intensive study
How is the HSK scored?
Each level has different total points, and you must reach a minimum score to pass:
- HSK 1–2: 200 total → 120 to pass
- HSK 3–4: 300 total → 180 to pass
- HSK 5–6: 300 total → no official passline
- HSK 7–9 is a single exam. All candidates take the same test and receive a score that determines if you qualify for level 7, 8, or 9.

How do I use my HSK Mock test code?

After purchasing a mock test, you’ll receive a single unique code by email.
Each code is linked to a specific level test and can be used only once and valid for one year from the date of purchase.

Is there an app for HSK Mock? Which one should I use?

Yes, HSK Mock is available as a mobile app.
If you're outside China, please download the app from the App Store or Google Play (search HSK Mock).

I haven't received my access code. What should I do?

If you haven't received your HSK Mock code by email, please check your spam or junk folder. If it's still missing, contact us at help@hskmock.com, and we'll assist you.
How do I delete my account?

Go to "My Account" section to directly delete your account.

Can I download the mock paper?

At the moment, mock papers are only available for online viewing. Downloading is not supported.
How can I get a refund?
- If you registered through chinesetest.cn:
  Please fill out the HSK Mock Refund Request Form and allow 4–8 weeks for processing. The refund will be returned to your original payment method.
- If you purchased on hskmock.cn or hskmock.com:
  Please email us at help@hskmock.com for assistance.
- If you purchased through the iOS App Store:
  Refunds must be requested directly via Apple's system.
